Industrial Odor Control Systems

MACH Engineering’s odor control scrubber or biofilter eliminates foul odors in various industrial and manufacturing processes. Our advanced systems effectively eliminate even the most stubborn smells, targeting secondary inorganic compounds and reactive materials like acids and gases. MACH Engineering’s wet scrubbers are efficient with water, chemical, media and energy consumption, making them a practical, cost-effective and environmentally conscious choice.

Our odor control scrubbers function efficiently to neutralize corrosive fumes using minimal water and energy. Wet scrubbers are the most commonly used system in wastewater treatment plants to deodorize in-process air from a fume source.

Common Sources of Odor Problems

In many industries, odors are produced from harmful gases that must be contained to ensure they don’t spread. Even when contained to the facilities, these toxic substances can lead to workers experiencing olfactory fatigue, reducing their sense of smell and affecting their ability to detect poisonous gases.

Odor scrubbers can help eliminate hazardous gases such as nitrogen oxides and hydrogen sulfides, allowing facilities to perform their processes without worrying about the environmental implications of the harmful gases.

MACH Engineering’s odor control systems for wastewater treatment handle the industry’s most challenging odors, including:

  • Ammonia.
  • Amines.
  • Bromine.
  • Chlorine.
  • Carbon disulfide.
  • Dimethyl sulfide.
  • Formaldehyde.
  • Hydrogen chloride.
  • Hydrogen sulfide.
  • Methanol.
  • Methyl mercaptan.
  • Nitric acid.
  • Nitrogen oxide.
  • N-Propyl mercaptan.
  • Phosgene.
  • Sulfur dioxide.

Most of these gases are harmful to the environment, and some are greenhouse gases that contribute to a rise in atmospheric heat. Hydrogen sulfide is highly flammable and can cause damage to equipment and health issues among workers.

High concentrations of ammonia can cause burning of the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract, and more severely, blindness, lung damage and death. Odor scrubbers can effectively remove and neutralize odors to protect the environment and reduce the risk of hazardous conditions for employees.

How Does a Packed Bed Scrubber Work for Odor Control?

A packed bed scrubber works to control odors by venting contaminated air upward through wetted packing media in a tower while a scrubbing solution flows down from above. As the air rises, odorous compounds are absorbed or neutralized by the solution. The spent liquid drains from the bottom, is replenished with reagent, and is recirculated back to the top.

Odor scrubbers from MACH Engineering can be designed with one or multiple stages to achieve the specified removal efficiency. Odor control scrubbers work like any other wet scrubbers. Depending on the chemical nature of the contaminant, a chemical reagent may be used to absorb it in liquid.

Tri-Packs tower packing media creates a large surface area to maximize the interaction between the harmful gases and the scrubber solution. As a type of random packing, Tri-Packs’ hollow, spherical shape prevents nesting and settling while a network of interior ribs promotes uniform liquid distribution across the bed, improving wetting without impeding gas and liquid contact. Wet scrubbers are great for amines and mercaptans. For sulfur and other complex odors, we use a series of treatments, including acid, caustic and oxidation.

Types of Odor Control Scrubbers

There are three types of odor scrubbers that can be installed in your facility:

Wet Scrubbers

Designed to get rid of hydrogen sulfide in a gas stream by spraying a liquid onto a polluted gas stream so the solution can be properly treated and the gas removed for good.

Dry Scrubbers

They eliminate corrosive and odorous gases produced in wastewater facilities. An alumina compound combines with other materials that handle gases such as hydrogen sulfide. The alumina compound absorbs moisture from the air, as well as arsenic, fluoride and selenium, preventing these substances from eventually contaminating drinking water supplies. Dry scrubbers remove odorous compounds such as aldehydes, dimethyl sulfide and volatile organic compounds.

Biological Scrubbers

These systems use packed tower technology to promote the growth of a biological medium and a packing medium that are then irrigated with water, which absorbs pollutants in the gas stream and dissipates them.

When choosing an odor control system, these factors should be considered:

Contaminates to be Removed

Hydrogen sulfide can be treated using a solution of sodium hypochlorite and sodium hydroxide, while ammonia can be treated using dilute sulfuric acid.

Number of Stages

Multiple stages are needed to treat high contaminant concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and ammonia.

Packing Material

Packing media should have shapes and sizes with a high surface area to volume ratio to provide a winding path for sufficient hold time and minimal pressure drop.

Liquid Controls

The solution should be monitored to ensure proper pH and ORP levels for efficient operation.

Benefits of Using Odor Control Scrubbers

By effectively removing unpleasant odors and harmful pollutants, an odor control scrubber significantly improves air quality, reducing health risks for employees and the surrounding community. MACH Engineering’s wet scrubbers for odor control create a healthier and more pleasant work environment, enhancing employee productivity and boosting morale.

Odor control scrubbers increase customer satisfaction and a stronger brand reputation by eliminating unwanted smells that could negatively impact their experience. Investing in these systems also ensures compliance with environmental regulations, helping you avoid potential fines and maintain a positive public image.
